Review: The Lovebirds
Review: The Lovebirds
Ok, this is probably the second Netflix Rom-Com that I've reviewed! Technically, this movie was supposed to be released in theaters last month but it had to be pulled from release due to the Pandemic.
This movie follows a couple named Jibran & Leilani played by Kumail Nanjiani and Issa Rae. Just as when they're both about to break up they get unintentionally embroiled in a bizarre murder mystery involving a sex cult. As they both solve this case, they figure out how they, and their relationship will survive the night.
I love the chemistry between these leads they are both funny and very successful comedic actors. Coincidentally, they're both in HBO comedy shows. Kumail was in Silicon Valley while Issa Rae plays the lead protagonist in Insecure. If you haven't watched Insecure yet, then get on it. IT'S GREAT TV.
Not only is the humor great, but the opening sequence was masterfully well-done and then it's cut them both four years later having a couple squabble that lasts for 5 minutes. KUDOS TO MICHAEL SHOWALTER! MY GOD. I'm soo impressed!
While it wasn't as poignant as Showalter's previous film, The Big Sick which also starred Kumail Nanjiani, this was still a great comedy film that's worth checking out.
Direction: 4/5
Acting: 5/5
Screenplay: 4/5
Cinematography: 4/5
Musical Score: 3/5
Costume Design: 5/5
