Why Roma Should’ve won Best Picture at the Oscars Instead of Green Book

Why Roma should've won Best Picture at the Oscars instead of Green Book:

Over the years, The Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts & Sciences has given awards for Best Picture to classic films like Rocky, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Ben-Hur, West Side Story, The Godfather Parts I & II, Annie Hall, Lawrence of Arabia, Platoon, Rain Man, Forrest Gump, Gladiator, No Country for Old Men and Titanic. Other classic films like GoodFellas, Saving Private Ryan, The Color Purple, Raging Bull, Fargo, Tootsie, The Social Network and Mary Poppins were robbed of their Best Picture awards. Other films like Psycho, Vertigo, The Birds, Rear Window, The Third Man, Pan's Labyrinth, Touch of Evil, Singin' in the Rain, The Big Lebowski, Groundhog Day, Heat, Miller's Crossing, Once Upon a Time in America, The Shining, Zodiac and 2001: A Space Odyssey weren't even nominated. The movies that did win Best Picture at the Oscars were The Apartment, My Fair Lady, Kramer vs. Kramer, Dances with Wolves, The English Patient, Shakespeare in Love, Crash, A Beautiful Mind, Chicago and The King's Speech. I think it's a sham that those movies won instead of those movies.

Don't even get me started on Shakespeare in Love and Saving Private Ryan. Why would you pick a movie about William Shakespeare over an epic WWII movie?! How about Crash over Brokeback Mountain? You basically picked a movie with no plot with an over-reliance on racial issues and xenophobia over a movie that told a beautiful story about forbidden love.

Now, I never thought that Green Book was going to receive the golden statue because it really wasn't that special. Yes, it did have social commentary on racial issues in the 1960s and Mahershala Ali gave a great performance as Don Shirley, not to mention that he's the first African-American to win 2 Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor and it was admittedly a great film. Fun fact, Viggo Mortensen gained a ton of wait to play Tony Lip. It's the story of an Italian-American who has to drive famed pianist Dr. Don Shirley across America.  That movie didn't even compare to the beautifully filmed and heartbreaking story in Roma. Based on Alfonso Cuaron's upbringing in his local neighborhood. It tells the story of a live-in housekeeper living in 1970s Mexico City in a house consisting of a mother and her 4 children. Not only was it beautifully filmed in Black & White, but it had biting social commentary on the Mexican community, the unbreakable bonds between people and it feels so personal and I feel like I know Cuaron better thanks to this movie. The character of Cleo was based on Liboria Rodriguez, the woman who raised Alfonso. When you see the jet from a distance in several scenes it points towards Cuaron's future in filmmaking. I just loved how the camera moved. Alfonso Cuaron is known for his extended shots in certain scenes while commenting on the dynamics of its most intimate scenes. It also would've been fine if BlackKklansman also won Best Picture. Also a great movie. Highly recommend.

What I don't get is why Parasite won both Best Picture and Best International Feature film at this year's Oscars while Roma didn't. That just boggles my mind.

For those of you who are living under a rock, Parasite is a Korean movie directed by Bong Joon-Ho about two families. One poor and one rich. It's a story of social class differences in a modern setting and how the rich are blind to the poor while the poor overpowers the rich. It's a biting social commentary on class discrimination in Korean society making us question who the real parasites are. Bong Joon-Ho is known for mixing genres like Comedy and Thriller into one blender and the results are pure cinematic gold.

Now back to Roma. If only The Academy could've just pay attention to how beautiful it was and just give it the award instead of Green Book. It's so criminal how The Academy favors movies that they think are good enough for "Best Picture" while the real "Best Picture" winners don't have that award. I could just go on and on about this whole thing.
