Best LGBT Movies of All Time!🏳️‍🌈

Hello, Everybody! I'm Santiago Brion and welcome to my new blog post! Today, I made a list of the best movies with gay themes, gay romance and LGBT-representation! Since that Pride month is near its end, I thought I'd like to share with you guys all of these great films. LETS GET IT! Now, unfortunately, I'm having trouble with uploading posters because of this new update. I do still hope that you can still enjoy reading this new post.

20. The Way He Looks

Released in Brazil in 2014, it follows a blind teenager named Leonardo who has an everyday life, a relationship with his best friend, Giovanni and seeking independence. When he encounters Gabriel, his view of the world changes completely. If you're looking for another coming-of-age movie to sink your teeth in, then this movie is for you. It's very compassionate, sweet and emotional and a great debut for writer/director Daniel Ribeiro with great performances from both Ghilherme Lobo and Fabio Audi.

19. Elisa & Marcela

A Spanish movie released on Netflix on June 7th, 2019, it tells the true story of Elisa Sanchez Loriga & Marcela Gracia Ibeas, a couple who passed as a heterosexual couple in order to get married becoming the first same-sex married couple ever recorded in Spanish History. Filmed in Black & White, it did a decent job of handling the LGBT themes while also being dull. But, to any girls looking for a movie for date night, this is for you.

18. Boy Erased

Based on Garrard Conley's memoir of the same name, Lucas Hedges stars as Jared Eamons who's the son of two Baptist parents and gets sent to gay conversion therapy. Lucas Hedges gave a really good performance in this heartbreaking drama and Joel Edgerton made an impressive film debut as director and it had Troye Sivan.

17. Milk

I think everyone should watch Milk and I mean EVERYONE! This movie is all about Gay rights and of course, famous gay rights activist, Harvey Milk. The movie earned Gus Van Sant an Academy Award for Best Director and Sean Penn shined as the titular fallen activist which earned him a well-deserved Oscar for Best Actor. This is mandatory viewing if you want to learn something about LGBT history.

16. Dallas Buyers Club

Taking place during the AIDS crisis, Ron Woodroof is shocked to learn that he has AIDS even though he's not gay. Ok, yeah, a lot of people who weren't gay had AIDS. Just look at Magic Johnson. Anyway, with Ron having only 30 days to live, he refuses to give in. He smuggles non-FDA approved drugs through customs and sells them to people who need them with the help of a fellow trans-person named Rayon. Both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Oscars for their performances, respectively and it's easy to see why. If you wanna see Matthew McConaughey act and I mean REALLY act. Watch Dallas Buyers Club.

15. The Kids Are All Right

Lesbian couple, Nic and Jules have been together for 20 years, raising two children thanks to the contributions of a sperm donor. As their daughter, Joni prepares to leave for college, she and her younger brother Laser start to get curious about their heritage. They both meet Paul, a sperm donor who helped them bring them into the world and they both set off a chain-reaction. Not only is "The Kids Are All Right" a movie about lesbian marriage, it's about marriage itself. Both Julianne Moore and Annette Benning gave remarkable performances while Mark Ruffalo was superb in one of his many supporting roles and it's one of many LGBT films directed by women.

14. Mysterious Skin

Gregg Araki is widely well-known in the Queer-cinema industry, with his work consisting of the Teen Apocalypse trilogy, which were, "Totally Fucked Up", "The Doom Generation" and "Nowhere". Mysterious Skin stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Neil McCormick who's a gay hustler following a traumatic event when he was a child. While not for the squeamish, Mysterious Skin is a thought-provoking and resonant experience.

13. High Art

Before Lisa Cholodenko directed The Kids Are All Right, she directed High Art, another great Lesbian love story movie. Starring Radha Mitchell and Ally Sheedy, it follows a magazine editor and a photographer who both have a very volatile affair in an art-world scene full of drugs and unexpected pleasures. Both actresses gave great performances and THIS is another great movie for date night.

12. God's Own Country

Francis Lee's directorial debut, God's Own Country follows a sheep farmer living in Yorkshire who falls in love with a Romanian migrant worker. This movie is all about loneliness and newfound intimacy. It's kind of like Brokeback Mountain but it's a very British love story and Josh O' Conner's performance was amazing.

11. A Single Man

Based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood and directed by Tom Ford, A Single Man is about an English Professor named George, played by Colin Firth, who mourns the loss of his partner, Jim. After being ignored by his partner's family, he prepares to commit suicide,  but before he does. it, he encounters the people that he met in Los Angeles. The art direction and costume design was BEAUTIFUL! And Colin Firth was really good in this movie.

10. Carol

Starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, it's about two married women who start an affair in 1950s Manhattan and it ultimately leads to complicated consequences. Todd Haynes' direction was superb and it had great performances from from both Blanchett and Mara and beautiful cinematography from Edward Lachman. IT'S A MUST-SEE!

9. Tangerine

Directed by Sean Baker, who gave us the equally excellent movie, The Florida Project, it's about a transgender sex worker who her boyfriend has been cheating on her, and she and her friend set out to find him and teach him a lesson. Shot on with three iPhone5S smartphones, this a very unique movie if you want to watch something that's completely different from the movies that you normally watch. It was also a great portrayal of transgender individuals and the direction was sold and the performances(particularly Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) were really good.

8. Boys Don't Cry

Oh, boy. This movie will break your heart. Based on a real-life tragedy, a transgender named Brandon Teena, played by Hilary Swank, which won her the Oscar for Best Actress, leaves his hometown under threat when his ex-girlfriend's brother finds out that he's biologically female. Resettling in the small town of Falls City, Nebraska, Brandon falls for Lana, an aspiring singer , and begins to plan for their future together. When Lana's ex-convict friends learn the truth, however, things change very quickly. This movie will definitely make you cry. If you have ever faced prejudice or experienced a traumatic event, then this movie isn't for you.

7. Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Based on the famous Broadway play of the same name, it tells the story of a rock singer looking for stardom and love. It complex themes like gender identity which were done right. John Cameron Mitchell is amazing as Hedwig and gave impressive direction in this movie as well and the soundtrack is great too. It's like The Rocky Horror Picture Show but with emphasis on "ROCK".

6. The Birdcage

This is one of my many favorite movies ever! I love The Birdcage! A remake of the classic French comedy, La Cage aux Folles, an engaged couple named Val Goldman and Barbara Keeley introduce their future in-laws. Val's father, Arman(played by the legendary and late Robin Williams), a gay drag club owner, pretends to be straight and attempts to hide his relationship with Albert, his partner and club's attraction to please Barbara's father who is a Republican politician. YIKES. This is one of the funniest movies you will ever see and that's all thanks to Robin Williams' performance.

5. Blue is the Warmest Color

Now this is the definitive Lesbian love story movie. A French teenager girl forms a deep and emotional relationship with an older art student(with blue hair)she meets in a lesbian bar. I loved the performances of Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux. Although the movie did receive criticism due to the director's behavior, it's highly regarded as one of the greatest LGBT movies of all time.

4. Philadephia

GODDAMN, this movie was SAD. It's about a lawyer named Andrew Beckett who gets fired from his law firm and sues his bosses for discrimination due to the fact that he has AIDS. This is one of my favorite performances from both Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington and a great directorial effort from Jonathan Demme. That scene where Andy's listening to an Italian opera on the radio really DID get me.

3. Love, Simon

Oh, man! I love this movie so much!! Simon will forever have my heart. It's about a closeted gay teen played by Nick Robinson who secretly messages a mysterious person named Blu who he falls for and must find out who he is. This was the first major Hollywood movie centering around gay teen romance and it succeeded so well! Also, you should watch the TV show, Love, Victor if you haven't already.

2. Brokeback Mountain

Another major Hollywood movie centering around gay romance, Brokeback Mountain is the story of two cowboys who engage in a love affair while herding sheep. This movie was a stepping stone for queer cinema and it told the best gay love story of all time. It's such a shame that it didn't win the Oscar for Best Picture. Instead, The Academy gave it to Crash. While the movie did win Best Director for Ang Lee, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Original Score for Gustavo Santaolalla who would later score two video game masterpieces, The Last of Us and its sequel, The Last of Us: Part II.

And now here are some Honorable Mentions
  • Beginners
  • Maurice
  • My Beautiful Laundrette
  • Imagine Me & You
  • Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
  • Alex Strangelove
1. Moonlight

Arguably, Moonlight is not only a great LGBT movie, it's also one of the best movies to ever come out of the 21st Century and the first major movie centering around a LGBT African American protagonist. It's told through the three stages off growing up. Youth, adolescent and early adult life. It's a great character study on the African American Male. Unlike, Brokeback Mountain, it won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It reminds us that black is indeed beautiful. Barry Jenkins is a really great director, I loved James Laxton's cinematography and Mahershala Ali gave a great performance as Juan which won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar and the themes were really powerful. Also, check out Jenkins' follow-up, If Beale Street Could Talk.

Alright, guys. Thanks for reading. Don't forget to comment below and Happy Pride Month.
