Best Tom Hanks performances

Best Tom Hanks performances

Hello, Everybody! I'm Santiago Brion and this is my list of the best performances by one of Hollywood's greatest actors, Tom Hanks.

This is my first list that I've made about actor performances and I've tried my best with this one.

10. David S. Pumpkins- Saturday Night Live

One of the best SNL characters of this decade and Tom Hanks' 9th time hosting, David S. Pumpkins made his debut on October 2016 and the result was glorious! Pumpkins is so hysterical and bizarre that you can't help but love it.

9. Victor Narovski- The Terminal

In one of Steven Spielberg's weaker movies, Hanks played an Eastern European tourist who gets himself caught up in politics. Because of the international conflict back home, he can't enter the United States and is trapped in JFK indefinitely. Hanks' portrayal of a foreigner living in a post-9/11 is a great performance in an otherwise inconsistent movie.

8. Richard "Rich" Phillips- Captain Phillips

This is arguably his best performance of the decade. Hanks plays Richard Phillips, a merchant mariner of the MV Maersk Alabama that was hijacked in 2009 and a man who gets himself into a deadly situation. His pleas feel so real when he gets captured by Somalian pirates, earning him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture- Drama.

7. Carl Hanratty- Catch Me If You Can

Another movie directed by Steven Spielberg, Hanks played an FBI agent who was in charge of capturing Frank Abagnale, Jr., a young con artist played by Leonardo DiCaprio. While Leo is the star of this great film, Hanratty's crusade against Frank and eventual partnership is the driving force of this movie.

6. Jimmy Dugan- A League of Their Own

"There's no crying in baseball." That's exactly what Jimmy Dugan says in this sports movie classic. Hanks playing a baseball manager is one of his great performances and you'll definitely root for him and his team in multiples rewatches.

5. Woody- Toy Story Franchise

This was technically the first time we ever saw a movie starring Tom Hanks. Coming out a year after Forrest Gump, Hanks' first vocal performance as a toy cowboy is iconic for a reason. You couldn't possibly think of a better actor to voice Woody, he's just too perfect.

4. Chuck Noland-  Cast Away

The movie that earned Tom Hanks his 4th Academy Award nomination and his second collaboration with director Robert Zemeckis, Chuck Noland is one of Hanks' many creations. You can feel his pain and what he's going through when he's stranded on an island with a Wilson volleyball. Chuck crying out for a volleyball will tug you at the heartstrings when it's floating away in the ocean.

3. Josh Baskins- Big

This was one of Tom Hanks' comedic roles and one of his best! The classic story of a boy who wishes to be big is one of the most iconic movies ever made. Josh trying to adapt in a grown up body will make you feel sorry for the poor guy, earning Tom Hanks his first Academy Award nomination.

2. Andrew Beckett- Philadelphia

Damn. His performance really got me. Andy Beckett's a young lawyer who's fired by his own bosses who then sues them for termination due to the fact that he is gay and has AIDS. Coming out during the AIDS crisis, Hanks' heartbreaking performance will stick with you long after the credits role. Andy listening to the Opera before another day at his trial made me speechless, earning him his well-deserved Academy Award for Best Actor.

Honorable Mentions:

- Captain John H. Miller- Saving Private Ryan

- Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger

- Can't believe he got snubbed.

- Sam Baldwin- Sleepless in Seattle

- Paul Edgecomb- The Green Mile

- Himself- The Simpsons Movie

- Jim Lovell- Apollo 13

- Joe Fox- You've got Mail

- Fred Rodgers- A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

- The movie that earned him his first Academy Award nomination in 20 years!

- Ben Bradlee- The Post

- The Conducter- The Polar Express

1. Forrest Gump- Forrest Gump

Come on. Don't act like you didn't see this one coming. While both Big and Philadelphia made him famous, Forrest Gump shot Tom Hanks to superstardom and got his second Academy Award for it. You witness the life of a man who experienced WWII as a kid, played college football, fought in Vietnam, meet John Lennon and John F. Kennedy, become a Ping-Pong champion, run across the United States and marry the love of his life and having a child together. The quotes are iconic, it's a hilarious drama film and you'll want to experience Forrest's journey over and over again.

Thanks for reading and don't forget to comment what your favorite movie with Tom Hanks is.
