Movies that would never be made today

Movies that would never be made today

Hello, Everybody! Today I’m going to discuss old movies that wouldn’t be made in the present day. Most of these movies are comedies and I’m not saying that these movies are bad, actually some of them are pretty bad. It’s just that these movies wouldn’t happen in today’s climate. Ok, here’s the list.

20. Love Actually

Yes, Love Actually is a great Rom-Com with genuine moments and popularized Ensemble Rom-Com pieces and is considered a Holiday classic. But if you look back on it now, it's many side plots are very problematic. Andrew Lincoln's character, Mark is in love with his best friend's wife and shows up on her doorstep declaring his love for her and it's creepy on so many levels, Alan Rickman's character, Harry cheats on his wife, Colin travels across the country with condoms in his bag and won over women instantly, not to mention the fat shaming and a sub plot involving the Prime Minister being in a relationship with one of his staff members would not fly due to the Me Too movement. I'm not saying don't watch this again on Christmas again, but just think about how these characters behave in the movie.

19. Grease

Alright, I love Grease as much as the next person, it's one of the most beloved and greatest musical movies of all time! But the fact of the matter is, that Danny Zuko is a terrible boyfriend! He lied about getting very far and pretended to not know Sandy in front his friends, he embarrasses her at the dance and tried to have sex with her even though she said "no". Not to mention that Sandy completely changed her appearance for HIM! Yes, they did end up together, but a woman would never put up with her boyfriend's antics. Other problems in the film is during the iconic song number, "Summer Nights", one of Danny's friends asked him if she put up a fight and Vince tried to drug Marty. Jokes about consent would never be in a movie today.

18. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

While you can appreciate Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson's chemistry, but their characters got together based on lies. Andi wants to make an article based on how to lose a guy in 10 days by breaking the guy's heart just to get a promotion, while Ben is a sports advertiser who needs to make a woman fall in love with him as part of a bet. Nowadays, their relationship is just bizarre.

17. She's All That

She's All That is a late 90's classic, kickstarting the careers of Freddie Prinze, Jr., Rachel Leigh Cook, Matthew Lillard and Paul Walker. Zach is still reeling from being dumped by his girlfriend. Desperate to get his groove back, he agrees to an impossible challenge by transforming Laney Boggs into the ugly duckling. Sure enough, they both fall in love and end up together in the end. It was a good premise back in 1999, but this kind of plot would not fly. While it is still a great movie, a boy transforming a girl will leave a bad taste in your mouth.

16. Avatar

Back then, James Cameron's Avatar became a monumental success becoming the highest grossing movie of all time. The problem? It's very derivative of Pocahontas, the visual effects don't hold up and it has a white savior complex. The Na'vi are basically Native Americans and need their help of the white man to save their race. Considering the very hard truth about the United States of America, a movie like Avatar wouldn't fly.

15. White Chicks

I still think White Chicks is so so funny, but the thing is, a movie where two African Americans pose as a white woman would never be allowed today. There's also the movie's treatment towards women including body shaming and objectification.

14. Porkies

A movie from the 1980s, with a bunch of horny teenagers as the lead characters is basically the premise of Porkies. With something like that, there's no way Porkies would be made today. There was even one scene, which was iconic at the time, that involved the teenagers peeping through a hole in the wall of the girl's locker room/showers. Man, what were the filmmakers thinking?! It's very doubtful that this kind of movie would never be greenlit today.

13. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective

This is one of Jim Carrey's best movies, but there were many problematic jokes. Mental Illness and Trans-genders were played for laughs. While Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura is hilarious, it's jokes toward the trans-community? Not so much. Considering today's political climate, something like Ace Ventura would never be made today.

12. I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry

This is one of Adam Sandler's worst movies and it's so hard to imagine how this got greenlit in the first place. The premise is that both Adam Sandler and Kevin James' characters pretend to be gay. So... being gay is funny? No! It's not! The movie was filled with tasteless jokes and stereotypes towards the LGBT community. Oh also.... Rob Schneider did yellow face. YUP.

11. American Beauty

At the time of its release, American Beauty was beloved by critics, winning 5 Academy Awards including Best Picture. The movie was praised for its cinematography, direction, screenplay and Kevin Spacey's "performance." The premise of the movie was that Spacey's character goes into a mid-life crisis and falls for a teenage girl. Considering the fact that Kevin Spacey's reputation got permanently destroyed due to sexual misconduct allegations in 2017, the movie is now very uncomfortable to sit through and the dialogue is very cringe.

10. Sixteen Candles

Sixteen Candles is one of the greatest teen movies of all time! But it does have very fatal flaws like Sam's grandparents commenting on her breasts, a racist stereotype in the form of Long Duck Dong and the subplot involved Ted and his friends showing the boys Sam's underwear in the boys' bathroom and there's also Ted trying to get a picture taken with a very drunk Carolyn.

9. Monty Python's Life of Brian

The iconic British troupe took on many topics over the years and Life of Brian is on of the greatest comedy movies ever made! But a movie that makes fun of christianity or any other religion of that matter would never be made today. The movie even received criticism from certain religious group who think that judaism shouldn't be suitable for a crass comedy.

8. Animal House

National Lampoon has become synonymous for introducing raunchy humor to the pop culture consciousness with Animal House being its first foray into this kind of sub comedy genre. Animal House is one of the most funniest movies ever made, it also hasn't aged well.  Characters drink, drive and take advantage of women, there was even one scene that involved someone having sex with a 13-year-old girl and there's also jokes about weight loss, in which the characters abuse diet pills. A scene involving sex with a minor would never fly today.

7. Twilight

One of my favorite things to do is roast Twilight, because I really don't like it. For starters, Edward told Bella right to her face that he likes to watch her sleep! IT SO PROBLEMATIC AND CREEPY! The visuals are very bad, the acting is horrible and considering how the vampire craze has since died down in the years since, the Twilight books are better off not being adapted into movies.

6. Borat

Borat is one of the most funniest movies of all time and one of the best mockumentaries ever! I sometimes say "very nice!" whenever I hear something great. That being said, there's absolutely no way that this would be made today. It makes fun of feminism, makes fun of a black man and the jewish religion was also put in the ringer of laughs. One of the jokes being that they were responsible for 9/11 and having the ability to shape shift into lice. Yes, it is a satire but not the kind that would be greenlit.

5. Manhattan

The premise of this Woody Allen romantic comedy-drama is basically this. A 42 year old man is in a relationship with a 17-year-old college student. Pedophilia right in your face! Given the controversy surrounding Allen and the Me Too political climate, there's no way that this would be made today.

4. Revenge of the Nerds

The 80s were a time for raunchy teen comedies, Revenge of the Nerds was a bit of success back in 1984. Today rather than people seeing it as a comedy, it's more of a cringe-inducing revenge fantasy. The premise was that a group of nerds team up to get revenge on a jock. It was criticized for its treatment toward African Americans and women and was full of racial stereotypes and creepy vibes. There was one problematic scene in which a woman is tricked into having sex with a masked nerd. Now that's another about consent.

3. Police Academy

This is the kind of comedy film that would never be made today and it's easy to see why. After the death of George Floyd sparked massive outrage that caused riots and Black Lives Matter protests and the hashtag #AllCopsAreBad or simply the acronym ACAB, trended on Twitter. Given the fact that the police can't be trusted and that they're actually bad at their jobs, I highly doubt that Police Academy would ever be made today.

2. Soul Man

Blackface in comedy movies are extremely frowned upon nowadays. However, in 1986 nobody thought that a white man donning blackface wasn't so bad. The premise was that C. Thomas Howell's character goes into law school by pretending to be black. You can already imagine the backlash back then and the backlash now if those going to be made today. Pretending to be black is not funny, it's extremely offensive!

Honorable Mentions:

- The Toy

- The Jerk

- Mr. Mom

- Weird Science

- Crocodile Dundee

- Jawbreaker

- Heathers

- Partners

- Zapped!

1. Blazing Saddles

Blazing Saddles is a masterpiece in comedic storytelling and one of Mel Brooks' best movies! But just like Borat, it's a biting satire with provocative humor and this would never ever ever be made today. Many of its jokes stem from making fun of the LGBT community, abuse towards women, Asians, Black people, Native Americans, Rape, the Irish, etc., I get that many comedy movies, like Blazing Saddles shouldn't be taken seriously, but let's be honest, would you be really laughing at this if this was made today?

Thanks for reading and don't forget to comment down below what movie you think would never be today.
