Review: The Devil All the Time

WHAT IS UP, EVERYBODY?!! I've been waiting to watch this movie for so long now and I've been looking forward to review it as well. So without further ado, here's my review of The Devil All the Time

Directed by Antonio Campos, this Netflix film is an ensemble Southern Gothic tale of corruption with deeply flawed and sinister characters. Based on the novel of the same name by Donald Ray Pollock, who also narrated the movie, The Devil All the Time is described as a dark tale taking place in post-World War II Southern Ohio and West Virginia being told through multiple generations impacted by violence with all of them being connected to one character, Arvin Russell. Who was played brilliantly by Tom Holland!

It's a story of Fathers and Sons, Bill Skarsgård plays Willard Russell, who returns home to Knockemstiff, Ohio from WWII with PTSD. His trauma becomes melded with faith, when he looks up at the cross outside his home, he can picture his fellow soldier being literally crucified and barely alive, seeing the horror in religion. He teaches Arvin to respond to violence with violence and that sacrifice is the answer.

This is only a fraction in a 2hr 20 min. movie. It spirals into multiple storylines, including a corrupt cop named Lee Bodecker played by Sebastian Stan, his sister Sandy played by Riley Keough, who's married to a serial killer named Carl played by Jason Clarke. Fast forward many years later and Arvin is now older, still living in Knockemstiff with his half-sister Lenora, whose father, Dudley ahem I mean a preacher named Roy killed her own mother by attempting to revive her. Then Robert Pattinson's character, Preston Teagardin, a false preacher, enters the narrative.

Every scene carries significant importance, with every performance being nothing short of brilliant, particularly Tom Holland. MY GOD! He conveyed every emotion perfectly with only using his eyes. Holland is already becoming one of the greatest actors of this generation, going from playing your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man to a deeply troubled young man carrying the sins of his father. I will never get over the fact that both Spider-Man and Bucky pointed guns at each other in that scene! Cherry can't come soon enough!!! Robert Pattinson only appeared for 15 minutes, giving another incredible performance. Skarsgård captured the persona of a man who worries that God can't hear him anymore.

The movie may turn off a lot of viewers due to its disturbing content, but its themes of false religion and violence in the heart of the United States will stick with you, while Arvin trying to keep himself awake during its final minutes, wondering if he'll ever enlist in the army like his dad will also keep you up at night.

Be sure to comment below your thoughts and let me know on all my socials if you've watched this movie, I'd love to talk about! PEACE!✌🏻
