Movie Sequels that weren't as good as the Original

Hey, Everybody! Today I made a list of sequels that didn't live it up to its predecessor. These movies were expected to live up to the previous movies and have failed in the process. These are the sequels that I personally did not like and some of them I thought were good, they just weren't better than the first movies.

11. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part

2014's The LEGO Movie was a HUGE financial success and is one of the best animated movies of the decade and it kickstarted a movie franchise! Both of The LEGO Movie and The LEGO Batman Movie were wonderful movies! However, a year and a half later after The LEGO Ninjago Movie came out with mixed reviews, LEGO Movie 2 became an unfortunate box office bomb. In the sequel, Emmett and his pals are now living in a post-apocalyptic Bricksburg after the DUPLOs attacked the city during the end of the first movie, when Wyldstyle/Lucy gets kidnapped by Rosa Diaz, ahem, I mean a mini-doll voiced by Stephanie Beatriz, it's up to Emmett to save her and travels through unexplained galactic worlds and encounters Rex Dangervest who is basically an amalicimation of every movie character that Chris Pratt has played over the last 5 years. Pratt has played an intergalactic space traveler, a raptor trainer and a gambler. Yeah, the humor was good, but it was cheesy and it was a musical, which I didn't like at all. The John McClain cameo was awesome tho! It had a good message and a great twist, it just wasn't wasn't as good as the first movie.

10. Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Kingsman: The Secret Service was awesome! Probably one of the best spy comedies of all time, kickstarting the career of Taron Egerton! Naturally, it became a box office success and a sequel was obviously announced. The Golden Circle saw Eggsy and Merlin travel to the United States after the Kingsman headquarters has been destroyed and seek the aid of the Statesmen. The action sequences were insane! They just overdid the action. The new cast members had wasted appearances, including Channing Tatum who was in a coma for the rest of the movie! It was also very very long! Sometimes a movie doesn't need to be longer for it to better.

9. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Director Mike Newell had some big shoes to fill after Alfonso CuarĂ³n directed Prisoner of Azkaban, which was critically acclaimed. Goblet of Fire unfortunately did not live up to its predecessor, it was the first Harry Potter movie to receive a PG-13 rating and the book was the first time that the franchise went to very dark places. It had great visual effects, yes. But the acting was very laughable, the ball was a bit distracting, Dumbledore's monstrous voice was jarring and the maze sequence was very frustrating. Although it did have two redeeming qualities, the first appearance of Ralph Fiennes as Lord Voldemort and Robert Pattinson's breakthrough role as Cedric Diggory.

8. X-Men: The Last Stand

The third X-Men had a lot to live up to! It was an adaptation of the best comic book arcs of all time, The Dark Phoenix Saga. Brett Ratner was taking over Bryan Singer's director's chair, meaning that expectations were very high. Unfortunately, the movie was very disappointing! The action was pretty good but cheesy, the acting was very otp and it had very underwhelming character development! Which makes 2019's Dark Phoenix being worse by comparison.

7. Thor: The Dark World

The first Thor movie was good(at the time of its release that is), and so, a sequel was announced with Alan Taylor as director. Thor and Jane are reunited when a new evil has arrived in the form of Malekith and the Dark Elves. This remains the MCU's lowest point due to its lackluster action sequences, frequent tonal shifts, a weak villain and weak chemistry between Thor and Jane. Thor Ragnarok ultimately redeemed Thor.

6. Shrek the Third

The first Shrek was a PIONEER! It satirized fairy tales and It was the first Animated Movie to receive the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and Shrek 2 was PHENOMENAL and a perfect sequel, so Shrek the Third was expected to outshine both of those movies. Unfortunately, it did not. The third installment was very mediocre and painfully bland! The pop culture jokes weren't even inspired or funny to say the least. But, hey, at least it made nearly a billion dollars at the box office.

5. Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines

T2: Judgement Day is regarded as the greatest sci-fi action movie of all time! It had an emotional ending one that concluded John and Sarah Connor's story. But, not in Hollywood! T3 was announced due to the success of the sequel and it was just way too goofy for its own good. It had weak characters, a derivative plot and visual effects that'll make you cringe. It was also the movie that killed the "Talk to the hand" phrase thanks to Arnie himself.

4. Spider-Man 3

Sam Raimi's two Spider-Man have become a gold standard in superhero cinema and defined the golden age of Superhero movies, particularly Spider-Man 2, which took everything great and spectacular about its predecessor and made it better. Expectations were at an all-time-high when Spider-Man 3 was announced and the movie was going to have Venom as the main villain. Unfortunately, the movie was a convoluted mess and with villains being shoehorned in including Sandman, a Spider-Man movie doesn't work with way too many villains depending on how these villains are introduced. There were soo many things that I hated about the movie! For one, the movie was long, it abandoned character arcs, J.Jonah had a heart condition for some reason which affected his character, the character of Eddie Brock was a BIG low point  and Emo Peter is something that most people would rather forget. It also ruined Tobey Maguire's in the process because of the infamous scene of Peter strutting down the street and acting like a complete jack-ass! Due to the mixed reception, the fourth Spider-Man film was canceled and Sony later made the same mistake of having a convoluted plot and a lot of villains in one film with The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

3. The Dark Knight Rises

Ok Ok Ok. I actually loved The Dark Knight Rises, it's a great film. It had a great villain in the form of Bane played by Tom Hardy, production design was impressive, it had an epic opening scene and the cinematography was breathtaking. But... it has flaws. For one, it had a weak plot twist, continuity mistakes, questionable character decisions, poor death scenes and a very divisive ending. You'd think that Christopher Nolan would succeed The Dark Knight with this one, but he unfortunately didn't.

2. The Matrix Sequels

The Matrix was a game changing movie! It put Keanu Reeves on the celebrity A-List, it had mind-blowing special effects, which introduced the filmmaking technique known as bullet time, a great villain in the form of Agent Smith played by Hugo Weaving, and it introduced a new movie to a whole new generation of moviegoers and two sequels were announced. But... the sequels were unbelievably disappointing. For starters, it had wayy too many reveals, convoluted backstories and dialogue that came from philosophical and complicated vocabulary. Hopefully The Matrix 4 will undo the sequels' mistakes.

Honorable Mentions

- Iron Man 2

- The Amazing Spider-Man 2

- Scream 3

- Pacific Rim: Uprising

- Ice Age: The Meltdown

Let's be honest, Ice Age didn't need to have sequels!

1. The Godfather: Part III

The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II are two of the greatest movies ever made! While Part III on the other hand was not. It had a weak plot that involved an inappropriate relationship, cringed acting and very poor pacing. I'm glad that Sofia Coppola chose directing as a permanent profession because she is a terrible actress! Instead of being a cool Mafia movie, it's a soapy family drama. The movie effectively hurt Francis Ford Coppola's career. How Part III became this kind of movie, we'll never know.
