Review: Happiest Season

Hello, Everybody! Today I'm going to review the Hulu original film, Happiest Season! It stars Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis, Dan Levy, Mary Holland, Aubrey Plaza, Alison Brie, Mary Steenburgen, Burl Mosesley, Jake McDorman and Victor Garber and it's written and directed by Clea DuVall, a veteran actress who appeared in 3 coming-of-age films: The Faculty, She's All That and But I'm a Cheerleader, which made DuVall an actress to look out for, and had supporting roles on Girl, Interrupted, Identity, 21 Grams, The Grudge, Zodiac and Argo and is DuVall's second feature after directing The Intervention, a comedy-drama about four couples on a weekend getaway only to be at an "intervention" on their marriage.

Happiest Season makes Clea DuVall a director to look out for in the years to come, it is also the first major LGBT Christmas movie directed by a lesbian director. The premise of this holiday rom-com is that Stewart plays a young woman who plans to propose to her girlfriend while at her family's annual holiday party, but here's the problem, she hasn't come out to her family yet. This puts a major strain on their relationship when Abby has trouble getting along Harper's conservative family. Think, Guess Who's Coming Home to Dinner but with a Lesbian twist. It's genuinely smart, funny and heartwarming.

The movie is all about queer alienation and the problems that rich people have including the conservatives and Republicans. Harper's father is running for mayor in Pennsylvania and it's never implied whether leans conservative or Republican. Harper's sister Sloane is married to Eric, a black man and have mixed-race twins and have given up their careers to make gift baskets. Harper's family wants to be the perfect family, but underneath the instagram feeds that Harper's mother posts online, they are really... not that great and that's what makes it funny.

It had no shortage of memorable characters including Emmy winner, Dan Levy as John, who had one of the best moments in the entire movie and Aubrey Plaza's scene-stealing turn as Riley Bennett. I can't even pick one performance that I loved, Mackenzie Davis broke my heart in two, Dan Levy gave one of the best movies quotes of this year and Aubrey Plaza has come a long way from being in Parks & Recreation. Every day, queer people have trouble coming out and that's ok. You're not ready, nobody's ready to be out, some parents may take it well and others don't. Every coming out story is different.

Alright, guys. Happy Holidays and be sure to comment your thoughts on Happiest Season!
