Review: Mortal Kombat

Hey, Everybody! The long-awaited Mortal Combat reboot movie finally came out in theaters and on HBO Max. I finally got to stepped foot in a theater in a year and it just so surreal to see a movie in public.

Mortal Combat(2021) stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Mehcad Brooks, Ludi Lin, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, Sisi Stringer, Elisa Cadwell, Josh Lawson, Tadanobu Asano, Ng Chin Han, Max Huang, Laura Brent, Matilda Kimber, Nathan Jones and Daniel Nelson and is directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan.

For starters, I went into this movie for the characters from the video game franchise that In love like Scorpion, Jax, Sub-Zero, Sonya Blade, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kano, Mileena and Raiden. But I was TOTALLY fine that Johnny Cage wasn't it, we're getting him in the sequel anyway(if it gets announced). The film follows an original character in the form of Lewis Tan's character, Cole Young who is an MMA fighter looking for his wife and daughter. Cole possesses the dragon mark which is an invitation to well... Mortal Kombat. Sub-Zero hunts down Cole and seeks sanctuary at Raiden's temple where he, Sonya and Kano train to be Earth's champions.

While the dialogue was pretty flawed, it did have great fight scenes that I really loved and that I was only there for. I didn't care for the movie's plot, I mean I never really cared for the MK narrative to begin with but watching Scorpion and Sub-Zero fight was great! Kano was the best comedic relief of the movie And what I didn't like was that Kung Lao was wasted. I mean, how can you do that to Frisbee hat?! I was also bothered with the fact that Mileena didn't have teeth on her cheeks. The fight scenes also looked poorly edited, maybe if it was edited like The Raid, it would've been a much better Mortal Kombat movie. I thought Cole Young was a very boring protagonist, he didn't add anything new to the MK lore and was just there.

Overrall, I loved the fight scenes/fatalities, dialogue wasn't very good, but I didn't care for that and I loved the characters and I thought Simon honored the source material very well.

I'm going to give it an 8/10.
