Review: Army of the Dead

Hey, there fellow film geeks! Today I watched Army of the Dead a new Netflix film that is directed by Zack Snyder. It follows a group of mercenaries who pull off a heist in Las Vegas in a quarantine zone where there are a horde of zombies. It stars Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Tig Notaro, Matthias Schweighöfer, Ana de la Requera, Hiroyuki Sanada, Omari Hardwick, Nora Arnezeder, Garret Dillahunt, Theo Rossi and Raúl Castillo.

No, this is not related to the Dawn of the Dead remake, I'm afraid.

For starters, it has the best opening sequence in a zombie film ever beginning with a Liberace impersonator singing Viva Las Vegas and then it shows off how the mini zombie apocalypse in Vegas happens and its main characters fighting off the so-called shambles including Bautista's character, Scott Ward and you can mute the opening scene and play any song with it, it's that good!

Scott Ward works at a burger joint while being estranged from his daughter, played by Purnell, and is approached by Tanaka, a billionaire, played by Sanada, like he's freaking El Professor, telling him about a job that is what he likes to call "a simple in and out." He assembles a crew, Maria Cruz, a mechanic, Ludwig Dieter, a safecracker, Vanderohe, Lily, a woman known as the "coyote", Martin, Tanaka's right-hand man, Marianne, the helicopter pilot and Mikey Guzman, an influencer and sharpshooter.

These characters are some of the diverse people I've ever seen! Vanderohe's probably my favorite character, he's just so smart and bad-ass and there's also Dieter who was also a great character, him and Van's friendship was one of the movie's highlights. I need more Matthias! I also loved Kate Ward and Lily! I'm really looking forward to seeing what Nora Arnezeder and Ella Purnell do next! Not to spoil anything but Martin was an ASSHOLE! Watch the movie and see for yourself, this is not a spoiler review, I'm not ruining this for everyone else. Dave Bautista has been giving really good performances lately and Scott Ward remains one of his best.

The action and visual effects are truly amazing! It's pure Snyder! His vision of Justice League redeemed his career and Army of the Dead has just elevated his status as a visual storyteller. The zombie makeup effects are soo impressive, they deserve and OMG, who came up with the zombie tiger?! And I don't know, I kinda felt sympathy for the zombie king and the zombie queen. I mean they did throw an abusive security guard in a pit of their army, so points to them.

I also liked that it ended with the song "Zombie" which is a bit on the nose, but I can't complain and the ending was DARK. I can't go further than that and it will make you beg for a sequel, but don't worry, a prequel movie is coming next year and an animated series set during the beginning of the outbreak is also coming as well. So, yeah, a lot of content is coming.

Overall, I absolutely enjoyed the FUCK out of this movie! It didn't necessarily need 2 and a half hours but it had perfect pacing too.

I'm going to give this a 9/10.

Thanks for reading and don't forget to comment below your thoughts.😉
