Most Anticipated Horror Movies of 2022 & 2023

Hello and Happy Hallow-weekend! Today, I am going to be talking about the horror movies that are coming in 2022 & 2023. Release dates are subject to change, so please comment below what your most anticipated horror movie is.

15. Renfield

R.M. Renfield is a fictional character within the universe of Bram Stoker's Dracula, and he's getting his own movie. It was greenlit by Universal Pictures after hearing a pitch from Robert Kirkman and they apparently liked it. "Rocketman" director Dexter Fletcher was involved with the project as director until "Lego Batman Movie" and "The Tomorrow War" director, Chris McKay was attached in April 2021. The movie will have a spooky and comedic vibe quite like Taika Waititi's magnum opus, What We Do in the Shadows, in which Renfield realizes that he's in a bad co-dependent relationship, and he's being played by Nicholas Hoult, who is no stranger to comedy, having a role in The Favourite and playing Peter III in Hulu's The Great.

14. Wolfman

A Wolfman movie was in development since the start of Universal's DOA Monsters Cinematic Universe, however after the success of Leigh Whannell's The Invisible Man, production started back again, proving that Universal Monsters' stories can be told in a present day society. Wolfman will star Ryan Gosling and will be made by Derek Cianfrance, who previously made Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines, both movies starred Gosling, and will be their 3rd collaboration. Expect Wolfman to be disturbing, heartbreaking and an introspective character study.

13. Orphan: First Kill

A sequel to Orphan wouldn't really work, because, well, Esther drowned in freezing water. But, I wouldn't put it past Paramount Pictures to make a prequel. It'll follow Leena Klammer as she escapes from the asylum and impersonates the missing daughter of a wealthy family. First Kill is directed by William Brent Bell, and Isabelle Fuhrman is back as Esther.

12. Karyn Kusama's Dracula

Another Universal Monster movie that's getting the modern treatment is Dracula. Karyn Kusama is directing, who has made horror in the past, directing Jennifer's Body and the psychological horror film, The Invitation. If anything, this might be Kusama's most important project if it succeeds.

11. Creep 3

Creep 3 will see Patrick Brice return again as director and Mark Duplass is back as a writer and is once again playing Aaron. While it might not live up to its stellar sequels, Creep 3 will bring the same cringe comedy and uncomfortableness to horror fans.

10. 65

This is a sci-fi horror starring Adam Driver as an astronaut who crash lands on a mysterious planet and has to survive the unknown. The film is being made by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, who were executive producers of A Quiet Place and is produced by Sam Raimi. This looks to be another tense and scary sci-fi experience.

9. Dark Harvest

Dark Harvest is based on a novel by Norman Partridge, about a monster called Sawtooth Jack, who terrorizes residents in a small midwestern town when he rises from the cornfields every Halloween with his butcher knife and makes his way towards anyone who is brave enough to face him. Richie Shepard has to prove that he's man enough to face Jack so that he can leave his town. The movie is made by David Slade, who previously made 30 Days of Night, Hard Candy and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.

8. A Quiet Place: Origins

This movie will follow a brand new story within the universe of A Quiet Place. Jeff Nichols was set to direct, until he unexpected exited, which I assume is because of creative differences. The spin-off is set to come out in 2023.

7. Pet Cemetery Prequel

Rather than continuing the story of the Pet Cemetery remake, a prequel was instead announced and will focus on John Lithgow's character, Jud Crandall, and will follow the time that he buried the dog that came back to life, but not without any creative liberties. The movie will also focus more on the Wendigo, the Mi'kmaq, and the cemetery. It'll be directed by Lindsey Beer and Jackson White will play Jud, while Jack Mulhern, Forrest Goodluck, Natalie Alyn Lind, Isabelle Star LaBlanc, Samantha Mathis and Henry Thomas joined in undisclosed roles. The prequel will be released sometime in 2022.

6. Don't Worry Darling

Following Olivia Wilde's directorial debut, Booksmart, Wilde's next movie is a psychological horror-thriller starring Florence Pugh as a woman who discover's a dark secret from her husband. I think Florence will deliver another incredible performance following her amazing role in midsommar. What's really exciting about it is that Harry Styles will have a BIG supporting role, with Chris Pine, Nick Kroll and Olivia Wilde also co-starring.

5. Evil Dead Rise

So far, Halloween and Scream are back, and Evil Dead has now become another horror franchise that is rising from the grave. Evil Dead Rise will either be a continuation to the franchise or a sequel to the Evil Dead remake from 2013. It'll written and directed by Lee Cronin, who previously did The Hole in the Ground. Rather than having the film take place in a cabin, it'll take place in the urban streets of Los Angeles, as the Dead take over L.A.; The film will be released on HBO Max in 2022.

4. Nope

For Jordan Peele's next movie... I don't know what it's going to be about which makes the anticipation and its mystery about it very scary. Nope stars Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun and Daniel Kaluuya. Just look at the poster and tell me that you'd run away. July 2022 can't get here fast enough.

3. Firestarter

Another movie getting the Stephen King remake treatment is Firestarter, a story about a little girl who has pyrokinetic abilities. While the original movie with Drew Barrymore wasn't bad, it just feels hammy and not scary enough as it used to be. Zac Efron will play the dad, Andy McGee, while newcomer Ryan Kiera Armstrong will play Charlie McGee and Vicky McGee will be played by Sydney Lemmon. If there's anything to be excited about, is that it's made by Blumhouse and will be directed by Keith Thomas.

2. Scream (2022)

Scream 4 came out back in 2011, but it didn't necessarily brought the franchise back on its feet. A fifth film was in development but it was made more difficult when Wes Craven passed away in 2015, and nobody can imagine the franchise without him. Titled appropriately "Scream", it looks to have the same satirical vibe of surviving a horror movie. The film is directed by Ready or Not co-directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, and is coming out in January! I'm ready for some more Ghostface.

Honorable Mentions:

- Texas Chainsaw Massacre

- The Invisible Woman

- The Black Phone

- Salem's Lot

- Light's Out 2

- Last Voyage of the Demeter

- The Exorcist

1. Halloween Ends

Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills were surprisingly great movies that have revived the franchise perfectly. After what just happened in "Kills", Laurie Strode is going to be coming back with a vengeance! On October 2022, we will finally see Michael Myers' killing spree come to an end.
