Review: The Guilty

Hello, Everybody! I am back with another movie review! The thing about being a college student, is that you have A LOT on your plate. I still need to look for a job, I have made a podcast, working on transferring to UAlbany and not to mention that I am part of the Transitions program, which is a place for Autism. Point being, is that not a lot of people have time to do what they love, and a lot of that can get sidetracked, but I can't promise that I'll make another blog post since that I do have a lot going on.

With that being said, here's my review of the Netflix film, The Guilty.

"The Guilty" is a movie based on a movie from Denmark of the same name, and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, with voice appearances from Riley Keough, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Dano, Ethan Hawke, David Castañeda, Bill Burr, Christina Vidal, and Eli Goree, and is directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by Nic Pizzolatto.

For starters, The Guilty is an Americanized remake with most of the dialogue being a copy & paste, but with a couple of different scenes. Gyllenhaal plays Joe Baylor, a former LAPD cop who's demoted to Communications and answers emergency calls while wildfires are spreading throughout California. Given the real life events that have happened, I can see why Fuqua wanted to put that in the movie, but it doesn't feel relevant to the plot, besides the fact that Joe is asthmatic and the air quality is affecting his lungs.

The one call that Joe answers, is, at first a woman drunk and looking for a booty call, turns into a cry for help when she's actually in a moving white van being driven by her ex-husband. Now, for those who have seen the original, you probably know what happens, but to those who have seen this movie for the first time, you're going to be in for quite a shock.

Depending on who you ask, this either the best thriller movies in recent memory or a carbon copy of its acclaimed predecessor. However, Jake Gyllenhaal gives another incredible performance as part of his long list of amazing acting roles in his underrated filmography.

I'm going to give The Guilty(2021) a 7/10

Thanks for reading and don't forget to comment below your thoughts.
